Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand and perform basic arithmetic operations, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, while also learning about the Ancient Greeks.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil
  • Calculator (optional)
  • Basic knowledge of the Ancient Greeks (e.g., names of some Greek gods, famous philosophers, etc.)

Activities

  1. Ancient Greek Number Match

    Create a list of numbers in English and their corresponding Greek symbols. Ask the student to match the English numbers with the correct Greek symbols. For example, "5" should be matched with the Greek symbol for "ε".

  2. Ancient Greek Word Problems

    Create word problems related to the Ancient Greeks that involve basic arithmetic operations. For example, "If Zeus had 10 lightning bolts and he used 3 to defeat Poseidon, how many lightning bolts does Zeus have left?" Have the student solve these word problems using their arithmetic skills.

  3. Ancient Greek Math Facts

    Research and share interesting math facts about the Ancient Greeks with the student. For example, explain how the Greeks used geometry to build impressive structures like the Parthenon.
