Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand basic geometric shapes and their properties, and apply them to dance movements.
Materials and Prep
- No materials needed.
- Prior knowledge of basic shapes (circle, square, triangle) is helpful.
Activities
Warm-up Dance: Start by doing a warm-up dance routine that incorporates different shapes. For example, make a circle with your arms, form a square with your feet, and create a triangle shape with your body.
Shape Hunt: Go on a shape hunt around the house. Look for objects that resemble different shapes, such as a round clock (circle), a book (rectangle), or a pyramid-shaped toy. Take turns pointing out the shapes and naming them.
Dance and Shape Match: Create flashcards with different shapes drawn on them. Shuffle the cards and place them face down. Take turns picking a card and performing a dance move that represents the shape on the card. For example, if you pick a triangle card, you can do a dance move that forms a triangle shape with your body.
Talking Points
"Shapes are all around us! Can you think of any shapes you see in your daily life?"
"A circle is a shape that has no corners and is perfectly round. Can you show me how you can make a circle shape with your arms?"
"A square is a shape that has four equal sides and four corners. Can you show me how you can make a square shape with your feet?"
"A triangle is a shape that has three sides and three corners. Can you show me how you can make a triangle shape with your body?"
"When we dance, we can use our bodies to create different shapes. Let's try making shapes with our arms, legs, and whole body!"
"Shapes can be found in objects all around us. Let's go on a shape hunt and see if we can find any circles, squares, or triangles in our house!"
