Activities

Steam trains use steam power to move. Steam is created by heating water in a boiler until it turns into steam. The steam then moves through pipes to the engine.
Inside the engine, the steam pushes against pistons. These pistons are connected to rods, which are connected to the wheels. When the pistons move, they make the wheels turn, and that's how the train moves forward.
Steam trains have a chimney on top of the engine. The hot steam escapes through the chimney, creating the iconic puffing sound and the plumes of smoke.
