Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand the environmental impact of Roman Gladiators and how it relates to modern-day environmental issues.

Materials and Prep

  • Internet access
  • Pen and paper

Activities

  1. Research: Have the student research the environmental impact of Roman Gladiators. They can look into topics such as the sourcing of materials for weapons and armor, the construction and maintenance of arenas, and the impact of large-scale events on local ecosystems.

  2. Compare and Contrast: Ask the student to make a list of similarities and differences between the environmental impact of Roman Gladiators and modern-day sports or entertainment events. They can consider factors such as waste generation, energy consumption, and transportation.

  3. Create an Eco-Friendly Gladiator: Challenge the student to design a fictional gladiator character who is conscious of their environmental impact. They can think about sustainable materials for weapons and armor, environmentally-friendly arena designs, and ways to minimize energy consumption during events.

Talking Points

  • Roman Gladiators were highly skilled fighters who entertained audiences in ancient Rome.

  • Their weapons and armor were often made from materials that required significant natural resources to produce, such as iron and leather.

  • The construction and maintenance of gladiator arenas required extensive labor and resources, including wood for seating and sand for the arena floor.

  • Large-scale gladiator events attracted huge crowds, leading to increased waste generation and strain on local infrastructure.

  • Similarly, modern-day sports and entertainment events can have significant environmental impacts, such as high energy consumption in stadiums and excessive waste generation.

  • By designing an eco-friendly gladiator, we can explore ways to minimize the environmental impact of such events, such as using renewable materials and implementing sustainable practices.
