Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to confidently perform arithmetic operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencil
- Calculator (optional)
- No prior knowledge required
Activities
Activity 1: Addition Race - Set a timer for 2 minutes and see how many addition problems you can solve correctly within the time limit. Keep track of your score and try to beat it each time you play.
Activity 2: Subtraction Challenge - Create a list of 10 random numbers and challenge yourself to subtract each number from a given starting number. Time yourself and try to improve your speed with each attempt.
Activity 3: Multiplication Memory Game - Create a set of multiplication flashcards and play a memory game with them. Turn all the cards face down and try to match the multiplication problem with its correct solution.
Activity 4: Division Puzzle - Solve a division puzzle by filling in the missing numbers in a division problem. Use trial and error to find the correct values that make the equation true.
Talking Points
Arithmetic is the branch of mathematics that deals with basic operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Addition is combining two or more numbers to find the total.
Subtraction is taking away one number from another to find the difference.
Multiplication is repeated addition. For example, 3 multiplied by 4 is the same as adding 3 four times: 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12.
Division is splitting a number into equal parts. For example, dividing 12 by 3 means finding out how many groups of 3 can be made from 12.
Remember to follow the order of operations: parentheses first, then multiplication and division (from left to right), and finally addition and subtraction (from left to right).
Practice makes perfect! The more you practice arithmetic, the better you will become at solving problems quickly and accurately.
