Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to apply arithmetic skills to solve mathematical problems related to building with Lego.
Materials and Prep
- Lego bricks
- Pencil and paper
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Activity 1: Counting Bricks
- Activity 2: Addition and Subtraction
- Activity 3: Multiplication and Division
Ask the student to count the number of Lego bricks they have. Encourage them to group the bricks by color or size to make counting easier.
Challenge the student to create two different Lego structures and then ask them to add or subtract the total number of bricks used in each structure.
Have the student build a Lego tower and then ask them to multiply the number of bricks in one layer by the total number of layers. Later, ask them to divide the total number of bricks in the tower by the number of layers.
Talking Points
- Counting Bricks: "Let's start by counting how many Lego bricks you have. Can you group them by color or size to make counting easier?"
- Addition and Subtraction: "Now, let's build two different Lego structures. After that, I want you to add the total number of bricks used in each structure. Can you also subtract the total number of bricks used in one structure from the other?"
- Multiplication and Division: "For this activity, I want you to build a Lego tower. Once you're done, multiply the number of bricks in one layer by the total number of layers. Can you also divide the total number of bricks in the tower by the number of layers?"
