By the end of this lesson, the student will have a basic understanding of Australian aboriginal history, culture, and traditions.

Materials and Prep

  • Internet access
  • Pen and paper
  • Printed or digital resources about Australian aboriginal culture

Activities

  1. Create an Aboriginal Artwork

Encourage the student to research different styles of Aboriginal art and choose one to recreate. Provide them with materials such as paper, pencils, and colored markers or paints. They can draw or paint their own Aboriginal-inspired artwork.

  2. Research Dreamtime Stories

Ask the student to choose a Dreamtime story from Australian aboriginal mythology. They can use the internet or books to find a story that interests them. Once they have chosen a story, have them summarize it in their own words and share it with you or the rest of the family.

  3. Learn Basic Aboriginal Language

Introduce the student to some basic words and phrases in an Aboriginal language. They can learn greetings, common expressions, and the names of objects in the language. Provide them with resources or websites that offer translations and pronunciation guides.

  4. Create a Timeline of Aboriginal History

Guide the student in researching the history of Australian aboriginal people. Have them create a timeline that highlights important events, such as the arrival of the first humans in Australia, the impact of colonization, and significant milestones in the fight for indigenous rights.
