Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to explore the connection between music and mental health, and express their understanding through creative activities.

Materials and Prep

  • Pen and paper
  • Access to a computer or device with internet

No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.

Activities

  • Research and Explore

Encourage the student to research and explore different genres of music that are known to promote mental well-being, such as classical, jazz, or nature sounds. They can listen to samples of these genres and take notes on how each one makes them feel.

  • Create a Mood Playlist

Based on their research, have the student create a mood playlist. They can choose songs that they believe will help improve their mood or help them relax. They can write down the song titles and artists, and explain why they chose each song.

  • Compose a Song

Ask the student to compose their own song that reflects a specific emotion or mental state. They can choose an emotion like happiness, sadness, or calmness, and create a melody and lyrics that express that emotion. They can write down the lyrics or record themselves singing the song.
