Fun Math Lesson Plan for 6-7 Year Olds

Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand basic addition and subtraction concepts and apply them to solve simple math problems.

Materials and Prep

  • Pencil
  • Blank paper
  • Counting objects (such as buttons, coins, or small toys)
  • Number flashcards (optional)

No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Counting and Writing Numbers

Practice counting from 1 to 20. Write the numbers down on a piece of paper as you count. Repeat this activity a few times to reinforce number recognition and writing skills.

  2. Addition with Counting Objects

Take a handful of counting objects (buttons, coins, etc.). Count the objects together and write down the total number. Then, add a few more objects to the pile and count again. Write down the new total. Help the student understand that adding more objects increases the total.

  3. Subtraction with Counting Objects

Start with a set number of counting objects. Count them together and write down the total. Then, remove a few objects from the pile and count again. Write down the new total. Help the student understand that removing objects decreases the total.

  4. Number Flashcards Game

If you have number flashcards, shuffle them and place them face down on the table. Take turns flipping a card and asking the student to say the number out loud. For an extra challenge, ask the student to perform a simple addition or subtraction problem using the number on the card.

Talking Points

  • "Math is all about numbers and counting. We use math in our everyday lives, like when we count our toys or share snacks with friends."
  • "When we count, we start with 1 and keep adding one more each time. Can you count with me from 1 to 20?"
  • "Adding means putting things together. If I have 2 apples and I add 3 more, how many apples do I have in total?"
  • "Subtracting means taking things away. If I have 5 cookies and I eat 2, how many cookies are left?"
  • "Counting objects can help us understand addition and subtraction better. Let's count together and see how the total changes when we add or remove objects."
  • "Playing games with numbers can make learning math more fun. Let's play a game with number flashcards and see how fast we can say the numbers!"
