Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to write a step-by-step recipe for making a cake.

Materials and Prep

  • Pen/pencil
  • Paper
  • Cookbook or access to a recipe website

Prior knowledge required: Basic understanding of sentence structure and grammar.

Activities

  1. Brainstorming: Have the student think about their favorite type of cake and why they enjoy it. Encourage them to consider the different flavors, textures, and decorations that make the cake special.
  2. Research: Instruct the student to find a recipe for their chosen cake. They can use a cookbook or search online. Remind them to choose a recipe with clear instructions and ingredients they can easily find.
  3. Step-by-Step Writing: Ask the student to write a step-by-step recipe for making their chosen cake. They should include a title, list of ingredients, and detailed instructions. Encourage them to use descriptive language and clear sequencing words (e.g., first, next, then, finally) to guide the reader through the process.
  4. Edit and Revise: Have the student review their recipe for any errors or unclear instructions. They can make revisions to improve the clarity and organization of their writing.
  5. Optional: Decorate and Share: If the student wants to take it a step further, they can decorate a small cake or cupcake based on their recipe and share it with family or friends. This step is not necessary but can add a fun and creative element to the lesson.
