Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to explore and appreciate visual arts through mixed media techniques.

Materials and Prep

  • Sketchbook or drawing paper
  • Pencils, erasers, and sharpeners
  • Assorted colored pencils, markers, or watercolor paints
  • Scissors and glue
  • Old magazines or newspapers for collage
  • Optional: any additional mixed media materials the student may have, such as fabric scraps, buttons, or found objects

Activities

  1. Create a Visual Journal: Encourage the student to start a visual journal where they can explore different art techniques and record their thoughts and ideas. They can use the sketchbook or drawing paper for this activity.
  2. Collage Art: Have the student create a collage using old magazines or newspapers. They can cut out interesting images or words and arrange them on a piece of paper. They can then glue them down to create a unique composition.
  3. Color Exploration: Ask the student to experiment with different color combinations using colored pencils, markers, or watercolor paints. They can create a series of small artworks exploring different color schemes and how they interact with each other.
  4. Mixed Media Self-Portrait: Encourage the student to create a mixed media self-portrait using various materials and techniques. They can incorporate elements like fabric scraps, buttons, or found objects to add texture and depth to their artwork.
