Objective

By the end of this lesson, Matilda will be able to improve her ice-skating skills and progress further in the Aussie Skate program.

Materials and Prep

  • Ice skates
  • Helmet
  • Gloves
  • Warm clothing
  • Ice rink access
  • Knowledge of basic ice-skating techniques

Activities

  • Warm-up exercises: Start with a few minutes of light jogging or jumping jacks to get the blood flowing and muscles warmed up.
  • Balance drills: Practice balancing on one foot while gliding on the ice. Alternate between legs and try to maintain balance for as long as possible.
  • Forward crossovers: Learn how to cross one foot over the other while moving forward. Start with slow, controlled movements and gradually increase speed.
  • Backward skating: Practice skating backward by pushing off with one foot while gliding on the other. Focus on maintaining balance and using proper technique.
  • Turning and stopping: Learn how to execute tight turns and controlled stops. Practice turning in both directions and stopping without losing balance.
  • Obstacle course: Set up a small course with cones or markers to navigate around. This will help improve agility and control while skating.
