Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and solve basic addition and subtraction problems.
Materials and Prep
- Pencil
- Blank paper
- Number cards (0-9)
Before starting the lesson, make sure you are familiar with counting numbers from 1 to 10.
Activities
-
Counting Fun: Start by counting objects around your house together. Count how many toys you have or how many books are on the shelf. Practice counting up to 20.
-
Addition Challenge: Use the number cards to create two-digit addition problems. For example, pick two cards - one with the number 5 and another with the number 3. Add them together to get the answer. Repeat this activity with different numbers.
-
Subtraction Race: Set up a race between you and your student. Use the number cards to create two-digit subtraction problems. For example, pick two cards - one with the number 8 and another with the number 2. Subtract the smaller number from the larger number to get the answer. See who can solve the problems faster!
Talking Points
- "Math is like a puzzle. We use numbers and symbols to solve problems and find the right answers."
- "Addition is when we combine two or more numbers to find the total. For example, if we have 3 apples and add 2 more, we get a total of 5 apples."
- "Subtraction is when we take away or remove something from a group. For example, if we have 7 marbles and we take away 3, we are left with 4 marbles."
- "When adding or subtracting, it's important to line up the numbers correctly and carry or borrow if needed."
- "Remember, practice makes perfect! The more we practice, the better we become at solving math problems."
