Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply basic math skills while playing Monopoly and understand how math is used in real-life scenarios.

Materials and Prep

  • A Monopoly board game
  • Money in the form of Monopoly currency
  • Game pieces for each player
  • A pair of dice
  • A pen and paper to keep track of calculations
  • Prior knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division

Activities

  1. Calculate Rent: During the game, whenever you land on a property owned by another player, you need to pay rent. Practice your addition and subtraction skills by calculating the rent amount. For example, if the rent is $100 and you roll a 4, you would need to subtract $100 from your current balance.

  2. Buying and Selling Properties: Use your multiplication and addition skills to determine the total cost of a property and how much money you will have left after purchasing it. For instance, if a property costs $200 and you currently have $500, subtract $200 from $500 and record the remaining balance.

  3. Managing Finances: Keep track of your income and expenses throughout the game. Use addition and subtraction to calculate your total money earned and spent. This will help you understand the importance of budgeting and making strategic decisions.

  4. Probability and Chance: Explore the concept of probability by analyzing the likelihood of landing on certain spaces based on the roll of the dice. Discuss how understanding probabilities can help you make informed decisions during the game.
