Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to create your own fishing lures using basic materials.

Materials and Prep

  • Small metal spoons
  • Colorful feathers or craft fur
  • Small beads
  • Fishing hooks
  • Strong adhesive or glue
  • Scissors
  • String or fishing line
  • Adult supervision or assistance

Make sure you have a safe and well-ventilated workspace to work in.

Activities

  1. Design your lure: Choose a spoon as the base of your lure. Cut colorful feathers or craft fur to attach to the hook. Experiment with different combinations to create unique designs.

  2. Attach the feathers or fur: Use a strong adhesive or glue to attach the feathers or fur to the back of the spoon. Let it dry completely before moving on to the next step.

  3. Add some sparkle: Slide small beads onto the fishing hook to add some extra attraction to your lure. You can use a variety of colors and sizes to make it more appealing to fish.

  4. Secure the hook: Carefully attach the fishing hook to the spoon, making sure it is securely fastened. This will ensure that the lure stays intact while fishing.

  5. Tie the line: Tie a piece of string or fishing line to the spoon, creating a loop to easily attach it to your fishing rod. Make sure the knot is tight and secure.

  6. Test your lure: Take your homemade lure to a nearby lake or pond and try it out! See if you can catch any fish using your own creation.

Talking Points

  • Why do we use fishing lures? Fishing lures are used to attract fish and make them interested in biting the hook. They come in different shapes, colors, and sizes to mimic the appearance of prey and trigger the fish's instinct to strike.

  • What are the different parts of a fishing lure? A fishing lure typically consists of a hook, a body or bait, and sometimes additional components like feathers, fur, or beads. These parts work together to create a realistic and enticing presentation for the fish.

  • How can you make your lure more effective? Experiment with different colors, shapes, and sizes to see what works best in different fishing conditions. Pay attention to the movement and action of the lure in the water, as well as the type of fish you are targeting.

  • Why is it important to secure the hook properly? Securing the hook properly ensures that the lure stays intact during casting and retrieving. If the hook is not securely attached, it may come loose and you could lose your catch.

  • What should you do if your lure doesn't attract any fish? Don't get discouraged! Fishing can sometimes be unpredictable. Try changing the color or size of your lure, adjust your fishing technique, or explore different fishing spots to increase your chances of success.
