Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand basic math concepts related to building and apply them in fun activities.
Materials and Prep
- Building blocks or Legos
- Construction paper
- Scissors
- Glue
- Pencil or marker
No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Activity 1: Counting Blocks
- Activity 2: Building Shapes
- Activity 3: Measuring with Blocks
- Activity 4: Paper Building
Ask the student to count how many building blocks they have. Encourage them to touch each block as they count and say the numbers out loud.
Challenge the student to build different shapes using the blocks. Start with simple shapes like squares and triangles, and gradually introduce more complex shapes like rectangles and hexagons.
Have the student measure the length of various objects using the building blocks. For example, ask them to measure the length of a pencil or a book by lining up the blocks next to the object.
Provide the student with construction paper, scissors, and glue. Instruct them to cut out different shapes from the paper and glue them together to create their own unique building.
Talking Points
- Counting Blocks
- Building Shapes
- Measuring with Blocks
- Paper Building
"Let's count how many blocks we have. Can you touch each block and say the numbers out loud as we count together?"
"Can you use the blocks to build a square? Great job! Now let's try building a triangle. How many sides does a triangle have?"
"Let's measure the length of this pencil using the blocks. Can you line up the blocks next to the pencil and tell me how many blocks long it is?"
"Now, let's get creative and build our own buildings using paper. Cut out different shapes from the paper and glue them together to create your unique building. What shapes will you use?"
