Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to practice basic math skills while having fun with Lego.
Materials and Prep
- Lego bricks (various sizes and colors)
- A flat surface to build on
- A pen and paper to record your answers
No specific prior knowledge is required for this lesson, just your enthusiasm for Lego and willingness to learn!
Activities
- Build a Lego tower and count how many bricks you used. Write down the number.
- Create a Lego pattern using different colors. Repeat the pattern at least three times and write down the number of bricks used for each color.
- Construct a Lego scene with different objects (e.g., houses, trees, cars). Assign a value to each object and add up the total value of your scene.
- Build a Lego bridge and measure its length using other Lego bricks. Write down the measurement.
Talking Points
- Math is all around us, even in our favorite toys like Lego!
- We can practice counting by building towers and counting the number of bricks we use.
- Patterning is a way to create sequences that repeat. We can make patterns with Lego bricks using different colors.
- Assigning values to objects helps us understand their importance. We can add up the values of the objects in our Lego scene to find the total.
- Measuring is a way to find out how long or tall something is. We can measure the length of our Lego bridge using other Lego bricks.
