Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and count different types of dinosaurs, as well as understand basic math concepts such as addition and subtraction.

Materials and Prep

  • Toy dinosaurs
  • Pen and paper

Activities

  • 1. Dinosaur Counting: Lay out the toy dinosaurs in front of the student. Ask them to count how many dinosaurs there are. Encourage them to touch and move each dinosaur as they count.
  • 2. Dinosaur Addition: Choose two different types of dinosaurs and place a certain number of each on the table. Ask the student to count how many dinosaurs there are of each type, and then add the two counts together to find the total number of dinosaurs.
  • 3. Dinosaur Subtraction: Similar to the previous activity, choose two different types of dinosaurs and place a certain number of each on the table. This time, ask the student to count how many dinosaurs there are of each type, and then subtract the smaller count from the larger count to find the difference.

Talking Points

  • "Dinosaurs lived a long, long time ago. They were big and fascinating creatures!"
  • "Let's count how many dinosaurs we have. Can you count them with me? 1, 2, 3..."
  • "Now, let's choose two different types of dinosaurs. We will count how many of each type we have and then add them together."
  • "Great job! We can also subtract the smaller number of dinosaurs from the larger number to find out how many more there are of the bigger type."
