Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to practice basic math skills using Lego blocks.
Materials and Prep
- Lego blocks (various sizes and colors)
- A flat surface to build on (table or floor)
- No prior knowledge required
Activities
Activity 1: Counting Blocks
Count the number of Lego blocks you have in different colors. Practice counting from 1 to 10.
Activity 2: Sorting Blocks
Sort the Lego blocks by color, shape, or size. Create different groups and count how many blocks are in each group.
Activity 3: Building Towers
Build towers using Lego blocks. Start with a tower of 3 blocks, then add 1 more block each time. Count the total number of blocks in each tower.
Activity 4: Adding and Subtracting Blocks
Create simple addition and subtraction problems using Lego blocks. For example, if you have 5 blocks and you take away 2 blocks, how many blocks are left?
Talking Points
- When counting blocks: "Let's count how many blocks we have. Start with one block and say 'one', then add another block and say 'two', and so on."
- When sorting blocks: "Let's sort the blocks by color. Put all the red blocks together, then the blue blocks, and so on. Count how many blocks are in each group."
- When building towers: "Start with a tower of 3 blocks. Count each block as you add it. How many blocks are in the tower now? Let's build another tower with 4 blocks and count again."
- When adding and subtracting blocks: "If you have 5 blocks and you take away 2 blocks, how many blocks are left? Let's count and see."
