Objective

By the end of this lesson, the 11-year-old student will be able to successfully start seeds indoors for a garden.

Materials and Prep

  • Seeds of choice
  • Small pots or containers
  • Potting soil
  • Watering can or spray bottle
  • Plastic wrap or a clear plastic bag
  • Markers or labels
  • A sunny windowsill or grow light

Before starting the lesson, ensure that the student has a basic understanding of plant growth and the importance of sunlight, water, and soil nutrients.

Activities

  • Activity 1: Seed Selection - Have the student research and choose the type of plants they want to grow. Encourage them to consider their gardening space, climate, and personal preferences.
  • Activity 2: Seed Starting - Guide the student in filling the small pots or containers with potting soil. Help them plant the seeds according to the instructions on the seed packets. Remind them to label each pot with the type of seed planted.
  • Activity 3: Watering and Covering - Teach the student how to water the seeds gently using a watering can or spray bottle. Explain the importance of keeping the soil moist but not soggy. Show them how to cover the pots with plastic wrap or a clear plastic bag to create a greenhouse-like environment.
  • Activity 4: Sunlight and Care - Discuss the significance of sunlight for seed germination and growth. Help the student find a sunny windowsill or set up a grow light for the seedlings. Instruct them to monitor the moisture levels and remove the plastic cover once the seeds start sprouting.
