By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to:

  • Identify different types of dinosaurs
  • Understand their characteristics and habitats
  • Explain the concept of extinction and its impact on dinosaurs

Materials and Prep

  • Internet access
  • Pen and paper
  • Printouts of dinosaur coloring pages (optional)

Activities

  1. Research and Identify Dinosaurs

Using the internet, research different types of dinosaurs. Write down the names of at least five different dinosaurs and draw a picture of each one.

  2. Create a Dinosaur Fact Sheet

Choose one of the dinosaurs you researched and create a fact sheet about it. Include information such as its name, size, diet, habitat, and any interesting facts you find.

  3. Dinosaur Extinction Timeline

Create a timeline of the events leading to the extinction of dinosaurs. Include major milestones such as the asteroid impact and the resulting environmental changes. Use drawings or symbols to represent each event.

  4. Coloring Activity

If available, print out dinosaur coloring pages and color them. Use your imagination to make them look as realistic or as creative as you want!

Talking Points

  • Dinosaurs lived millions of years ago. They were incredible creatures that roamed the Earth long before humans existed.

"Did you know that dinosaurs lived during a time called the Mesozoic Era? It was a very long time ago, even before your great-great-great grandparents were born!"

  • There were many different types of dinosaurs. Some were small and walked on two legs, while others were huge and walked on four legs.

"Can you imagine a dinosaur as big as a school bus? Some dinosaurs were really gigantic! But there were also small dinosaurs, like the size of a chicken."

  • Dinosaurs had different characteristics and lived in different habitats. Some dinosaurs had sharp teeth and claws for hunting, while others were herbivores and only ate plants.

"Just like animals today, dinosaurs had different features that helped them survive. Some were fierce predators, while others were gentle plant-eaters."

  • Dinosaurs became extinct. This means that they all died out and no longer exist today. Scientists believe that a large asteroid hitting the Earth caused major changes in the environment, making it difficult for dinosaurs to survive.

"Unfortunately, dinosaurs are not around anymore. They disappeared a very long time ago. Can you imagine how different our world would be if dinosaurs were still here?"
