Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to practice basic math skills using LEGO bricks and have fun while doing it!
Materials and Prep
- LEGO bricks of various sizes and colors
- A flat surface to work on
- A pen and paper for taking notes
No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Counting Bricks: Start by counting how many LEGO bricks you have in total. Arrange them in groups of 10 and count how many groups you have.
- Addition and Subtraction: Use the LEGO bricks to create simple addition and subtraction problems. For example, build a tower with 5 bricks and add 3 more. How many bricks do you have now? You can also remove bricks to practice subtraction.
- Patterning: Create different patterns using LEGO bricks. Start with a simple pattern like red, blue, red, blue and then challenge yourself to create more complex patterns.
- Measurement: Use LEGO bricks to measure the length and width of different objects in your home. How many LEGO bricks long is your table? How many LEGO bricks wide is your book?
Talking Points
- "Math can be so much fun when we incorporate LEGO into our learning!"
- "Let's start by counting how many LEGO bricks we have. Count along with me."
- "Now, let's group our LEGO bricks into sets of 10. How many sets do we have?"
- "Let's practice addition. If we have 5 LEGO bricks and add 3 more, how many do we have in total?"
- "Now, let's try subtraction. If we have 8 LEGO bricks and remove 2, how many do we have left?"
- "Wow, you're doing great! Let's create a pattern using LEGO bricks. What colors should we use?"
- "Now, let's measure the length of your table using LEGO bricks. How many bricks long is it?"
- "Lastly, let's measure the width of your book using LEGO bricks. How many bricks wide is it?"
