Objective
By the end of this lesson, the 3-year-old student will be able to recognize and write the letters of the alphabet.
Materials and Prep
- Whiteboard or large paper
- Markers or crayons
- Alphabet flashcards (optional)
- Letter tracing worksheets (optional)
Activities
Letter Hunt: Hide alphabet flashcards around the room and ask the student to find them. Once found, encourage the student to trace the letters with their finger and say the letter out loud.
Alphabet Match: Write the uppercase letters of the alphabet on the whiteboard or paper. Cut out lowercase letter shapes from separate pieces of paper. Ask the student to match the lowercase letters to their corresponding uppercase letters.
Letter Tracing: Provide the student with letter tracing worksheets. Demonstrate how to trace each letter with a marker or crayon, emphasizing the correct stroke order. Encourage the student to trace the letters on their own.
Talking Points
"Letters are special shapes that make sounds when we say them."
"Each letter has a name. Can you say the name of this letter?" (Point to a letter and wait for the student to respond)
"Great job! Now, let's trace the letter together. Start here and go down, then make a curve like this."
"When we write letters, we can use different colors to make it more fun. What color would you like to use?"
"Look! You found the letter! Can you tell me the sound it makes?"
"Now, let's match the lowercase letter to its uppercase letter. Can you find the matching pair?"
