Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to add numbers together and solve simple addition problems.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencil
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Activity 1: Counting Fingers
- Activity 2: Number Line Addition
- Activity 3: Picture Addition
Start by counting your fingers. How many fingers do you have on one hand? How many fingers do you have on both hands together? Write down the numbers.
Create a number line from 1 to 10 on your paper. Practice adding numbers by moving forward on the number line. For example, if you start at 3 and add 2, you move forward two spaces to reach 5. Try different addition problems on the number line.
Draw pictures of objects, such as apples or stars. Write a number next to each picture to represent how many objects there are. Add the numbers together to find the total. For example, if you have 3 apples and 2 stars, what is the total number of objects?
