Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to practice basic math skills while engaging in a fun LEGO activity. They will also develop social-emotional skills such as creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork.
Materials and Prep
- LEGO bricks
- Number cards (1-10)
- Blank paper and crayons/markers
- A clear workspace
No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Building Towers: Encourage the student to use LEGO bricks to build towers of different heights. They can practice counting the number of bricks used for each tower and compare their heights.
- Counting Bricks: Place number cards (1-10) randomly on the floor. The student can walk around, count the number of bricks shown on each card, and place the corresponding number of LEGO bricks on top.
- LEGO Patterns: Create a simple pattern using LEGO bricks (e.g., red, blue, red, blue). Ask the student to continue the pattern by adding the next brick. Encourage them to create their own patterns as well.
- LEGO Art: Provide the student with a blank paper and crayons/markers. Ask them to draw their favorite LEGO creation and then share it with others, explaining what they built and why they like it.
Talking Points
- "Let's count how many bricks we have. 1, 2, 3... Can you count with me?"
- "Look at these number cards. Can you find the card with the number 5? Great! Now let's count out 5 LEGO bricks together."
- "Wow, you built a tall tower! Can you tell me how many bricks you used? Let's count them together."
- "What colors are you using for your LEGO pattern? Can you show me the next brick in the pattern?"
- "I love your LEGO art! Can you tell me what you built? Why do you like it? Let's share it with others."
- "Sometimes building with LEGO can be challenging. If you get stuck, remember to take a deep breath and try a different approach. You can do it!"
