  • Old magazines or newspapers
  • Construction paper or cardstock
  • Pencils or markers

Before starting the lesson, make sure you have a clear workspace and gather all the materials listed above.

Activities

  • Activity 1: Introduction to Collage
  • Start by explaining what a collage is. Show examples of different collages from magazines or online. Discuss how collage is a technique where you create an artwork by combining different materials, such as pictures, words, and textures, onto a surface.

  • Activity 2: Collecting Materials
  • Give the student some time to gather old magazines or newspapers. Encourage them to look for interesting images, patterns, and colors that they might want to use in their collage.

  • Activity 3: Planning the Collage
  • Have the student sketch out a design for their collage on a piece of construction paper or cardstock. They can decide on a theme or a story they want to tell through their artwork.

  • Activity 4: Creating the Collage
  • Using scissors, have the student cut out the images and words they want to include in their collage. Then, they can arrange and glue the cutouts onto their construction paper or cardstock, creating their own unique collage artwork.
