Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to explore different painting techniques and create a unique artwork.

Materials and Prep

  • Canvas or thick paper
  • Paintbrushes of various sizes
  • Acrylic or watercolor paints
  • Water cups for cleaning brushes
  • Palette or plastic plate for mixing colors
  • Old newspaper or plastic sheet to protect the working area
  • A reference image or object to paint

No prior knowledge or experience is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Warm-up exercise: Start by practicing basic brushstrokes and mixing colors on a separate piece of paper. Experiment with different techniques such as stippling, cross-hatching, and blending.
  2. Observational painting: Choose a reference image or object to paint. Spend some time observing the details, colors, and textures. Begin by sketching the outlines lightly on the canvas or paper.
  3. Color blocking: Use bold brushstrokes to fill in the main areas of your artwork with flat blocks of color. Don't worry about details at this stage.
  4. Layering and blending: Once the base colors are dry, start adding layers of paint to create depth and dimension. Experiment with blending colors together to achieve smooth transitions.
  5. Detailing and finishing touches: Add finer details and highlights to your painting. Pay attention to light and shadow, texture, and any other elements that make your artwork more interesting and realistic.
  6. Clean-up: Rinse the brushes thoroughly and let the painting dry before displaying or storing it.
