Materials and Prep

  • Pen or pencil
  • Blank paper or notebook
  • Access to a computer or tablet with internet

No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Listen and Identify

Choose a few different songs or musical pieces to listen to. As you listen, try to identify the melody, rhythm, and pitch. Write down your observations in your notebook.

  2. Create a Melody

Using your pen or pencil and blank paper, try to create your own melody. Start by drawing a line that goes up and down. This line will represent the pitch of your melody. Then, add dots or small circles along the line to represent different notes. Experiment with different patterns and lengths of notes to create your own unique melody.

  3. Rhythm Clapping

Choose a simple song or nursery rhyme that you are familiar with. Clap your hands or tap a rhythm using your fingers on a table while singing the song. Pay attention to the rhythm and try to keep a steady beat. You can also try clapping along to different songs to practice your rhythm skills.

Talking Points

  • Melody: Melody is the tune or main musical line in a song. It's what you hum or sing along to. It's like the melody is the star of the show!

  • Rhythm: Rhythm is the beat or pattern of sounds in music. It's like the heartbeat of the music. It helps us keep time and dance to the music.

  • Pitch: Pitch is how high or low a sound is. Think of it like the different levels of your voice when you say "aaaah". Some sounds are higher, and some are lower. In music, we can have high and low pitches too!
