Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to create drawings using charcoal and understand basic techniques to enhance your artwork.

Materials and Prep

  • Charcoal sticks
  • Drawing paper
  • Kneaded eraser
  • Newsprint paper (for practicing)
  • Reference images or objects to draw

Make sure you have a clean and well-lit workspace. Protect your work area with newspaper or a plastic sheet to prevent any mess.

Activities

  • Activity 1: Warm-up exercises
  • Start with some warm-up exercises to get comfortable with using charcoal. Practice making different types of lines (thin, thick, curved, straight) and shading techniques (hatching, cross-hatching, blending).

  • Activity 2: Still life drawing
  • Set up a simple still life arrangement with objects of your choice. Focus on observing the objects' shapes, shadows, and highlights. Start by lightly sketching the basic shapes with charcoal and gradually build up the details.

  • Activity 3: Portrait drawing
  • Choose a reference image of a person or use a mirror to draw a self-portrait. Pay attention to facial features, proportions, and capturing the expression. Start with a light outline and gradually add shading and details.

  • Activity 4: Landscape drawing
  • Find a reference image of a landscape or go outside to observe nature. Focus on capturing the different elements like trees, mountains, and sky. Experiment with different charcoal techniques to create texture and depth.

Talking Points

  • Charcoal is a versatile drawing medium that allows for rich, dark tones and expressive marks.
  • Hold the charcoal stick loosely for a more fluid and expressive line, or hold it tightly for more control.
  • Experiment with different pressures to create variations in value and texture.
  • Blending can be done using your fingers, a blending stump, or a piece of soft cloth.
  • Remember to step back and observe your drawing from a distance to check for proportions and overall composition.
  • Mistakes can be easily corrected using a kneaded eraser or by gently lifting off excess charcoal with a clean cloth.
  • Don't be afraid to experiment and have fun with charcoal. It's a forgiving medium, so embrace the unexpected and let your creativity flow!
