Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to read and tell time on an analog clock.
Materials and Prep
- An analog clock
- A whiteboard or a piece of paper
- A marker or pen
Before starting the lesson, make sure the student is familiar with counting numbers up to 60.
Activities
- Create a Clock: Draw a large circle on the whiteboard or paper. Divide the circle into 12 equal sections. Write the numbers 1 to 12 around the circle. Draw two hands on the clock, one shorter and one longer.
- Show and Tell: Ask the student to identify the numbers on the clock and explain their positions. Then, demonstrate how the hour and minute hands move on the clock.
- Practice Time: Call out different times, and ask the student to set the hands of the clock accordingly. Start with o'clock times and gradually introduce half-past and quarter-past times.
- Make Your Own Time: Give the student a blank clock face and ask them to create different times using the hour and minute hands. Encourage creativity and experimentation.
Talking Points
- "A clock helps us know what time it is." - Show the student an analog clock and explain its purpose.
- "The numbers on the clock go from 1 to 12." - Point to each number on the clock face and emphasize their order.
- "The shorter hand tells us the hour." - Show the hour hand and explain that it points to the hour on the clock.
- "The longer hand tells us the minutes." - Show the minute hand and explain that it points to the minutes on the clock.
- "When the minute hand is on 12, it means o'clock." - Demonstrate how the minute hand aligns with the numbers when it's on 12.
- "When the minute hand is on 6, it means half-past." - Show how the minute hand halfway between two numbers indicates half-past.
- "When the minute hand is on 3, it means quarter-past." - Show how the minute hand pointing to 3 indicates quarter-past.
- "You can make different times on a clock by moving the hands." - Encourage the student to experiment with moving the hands to create different times.
