Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil
  • Ruler or measuring tape
  • Camera or smartphone with camera
  • Access to your home

Before starting this lesson, make sure you have a basic understanding of measurements and have access to your home to complete the activities.

Activities

  1. Measure and draw your home: Using a ruler or measuring tape, measure the dimensions of each room in your home. Then, draw a floor plan of your home on paper, labeling each room with its dimensions.

  2. Identify different construction materials: Take a walk around your home and identify the different materials used in its construction. Take pictures of these materials and create a collage or slideshow to showcase them.

  3. Research building codes: Find out about the building codes and regulations that apply to your area. Look for information online or visit your local library to gather resources. Write a short summary of the most important regulations.

  4. Interview a professional: If possible, reach out to a local architect, contractor, or builder and ask if you can conduct a short interview with them. Prepare a list of questions about building and construction and record their answers. Summarize the interview in a report.
