Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand the concept of money, practice counting and using money, and apply basic math skills in a fun grocery store pretend play.
Materials and Prep
- Fake money (coins and bills)
- Various grocery items (real or pretend)
- A small table or area to set up the grocery store
- Pen and paper for recording prices and totals
- Optional: Shopping bags or baskets
Activities
- Set up the grocery store: Arrange the grocery items on the table or designated area, creating a display similar to a real grocery store.
- Assign roles: Let the student take turns being the cashier and the customer. Encourage them to switch roles to experience both perspectives.
- Shopping spree: Give the student a predetermined amount of fake money and allow them to "shop" for items in the grocery store. They can select items and place them in a shopping bag or basket.
- Cashier practice: When the student is the cashier, they can practice counting and calculating the total cost of the items chosen by the customer. They should also give back change if necessary.
- Record keeping: Have the student record the prices of the items and the total amount spent for each customer. This can be done using pen and paper or a simple spreadsheet.
Talking Points
- Money is used to buy things we need or want.
- We can use different coins and bills to represent different values of money.
- When we go to a grocery store, we pick out items we want to buy.
- Each item has a price tag or a cost that tells us how much it costs.
- The cashier adds up all the prices to find the total cost of the items.
- If we give the cashier more money than the total cost, they give us change back.
- It's important to count money carefully to make sure we give or receive the correct amount.
- Playing grocery store helps us practice counting money and using math skills.
