Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand how the properties of materials determine their use.

Materials and Prep

  • Various materials such as paper, plastic, metal, fabric, etc.
  • Objects made from different materials (e.g., a plastic cup, a metal spoon, a wooden block)
  • A safe working area

No specific prior knowledge is required for this lesson.

Activities

  • Sorting Materials: Collect different materials and ask the student to sort them into groups based on their properties (e.g., hard, soft, flexible, transparent, opaque).
  • Material Investigation: Provide various objects made from different materials and encourage the student to explore and describe their properties (e.g., plastic cup - lightweight, transparent, sturdy).
  • Material Experiment: Conduct a simple experiment to demonstrate how the properties of materials determine their use. For example, test the absorbency of different materials by placing a drop of water on them and observing how quickly it is absorbed.
  • Material Art: Allow the student to create a collage using different materials. Discuss how the choice of materials affects the outcome and purpose of their artwork.

Talking Points

  • Materials Have Different Properties: "Materials are different from each other. Some are hard, some are soft, and some are in between. They can also be transparent or see-through, or they can be opaque and you can't see through them."
  • Materials Have Different Uses: "Because materials have different properties, we use them for different things. For example, we use soft materials like fabric to make clothes because they are comfortable to wear. We use hard materials like metal to make tools because they are strong and durable."
  • Exploring Different Materials: "Let's explore different materials and see how they feel. We can touch them, bend them, and even listen to the sounds they make when we tap on them. This will help us understand their properties."
  • Testing Materials: "We can also test materials to see how they behave. We can see if they absorb water or not, or if they can float or sink in water. These tests help us learn more about their properties."
  • Using Materials in Art: "Artists use different materials to create their artwork. They choose materials based on what they want to make and how they want it to look. The materials they choose can change the way their artwork feels and looks."
