Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to investigate the suitability of natural and processed materials for a range of purposes.

Materials and Prep

  • Various natural materials (e.g., wood, leaves, rocks)
  • Various processed materials (e.g., plastic, metal, fabric)
  • Paper and pen for note-taking
  • Access to a computer or library for research (optional)

Before starting the lesson, the student should have a basic understanding of different types of materials and their properties.

Activities

  1. Material Hunt: Ask the student to go on a scavenger hunt around the house or outdoor area to find different natural and processed materials. They should collect samples of each material and make a list of their findings.

  2. Properties Investigation: Instruct the student to examine each material they collected and make observations about their properties (e.g., color, texture, flexibility, durability). They can record their observations in a table or chart.

  3. Purpose Match-Up: Provide the student with a list of purposes (e.g., building, clothing, packaging) and ask them to match each purpose with the most suitable material from their collection. Encourage them to think about the properties of each material and how they align with the purpose.

  4. Research and Report: If access to a computer or library is available, encourage the student to research additional examples of natural and processed materials used for specific purposes. They can create a report or presentation showcasing their findings.
