Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand basic math concepts related to play in the bush.
Materials and Prep
- No additional materials are needed for this lesson.
- Prior knowledge of counting numbers up to 10 is helpful.
Activities
Counting Nature Objects: Go outside and explore the bush. Encourage the student to count different objects they find, such as rocks, leaves, or sticks. Help them practice counting from 1 to 10.
Sorting and Grouping: Collect various natural items from the bush, such as different types of leaves or small pebbles. Ask the student to sort and group them based on their similarities. For example, they can group leaves by color or size.
Nature Patterns: Create simple patterns using natural objects from the bush. Start with a basic pattern (e.g., leaf, rock, leaf, rock) and ask the student to continue the pattern. Encourage them to create their own patterns as well.
Estimation Game: Choose a natural object, like a fallen branch, and ask the student to estimate its length. Then, together, measure the object using hand spans or small steps. Compare their estimation with the actual measurement.
Talking Points
- "Nature is a great place to learn and play!"
- "Let's count together. Can you count these rocks? 1, 2, 3..."
- "See these leaves? Let's sort them by color. Can you find all the green leaves?"
- "Look at this pattern I started with leaves and rocks. Can you continue the pattern?"
- "Estimation means making a good guess. How long do you think this branch is? Let's find out!"
