Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to use a range of materials, techniques, and processes to create artworks.
Materials and Prep
- Drawing paper
- Pencils
- Colored pencils
- Watercolor paints
- Paintbrushes
- Scissors
- Glue
- Various found objects (e.g. leaves, buttons, bottle caps)
No prior knowledge is necessary for this lesson.
Activities
- Create a mixed media collage: Cut out various shapes from the drawing paper and glue them onto a larger sheet. Use colored pencils and found objects to add details and texture to the collage.
- Experiment with watercolor resist: Wet the drawing paper and then apply watercolor paint on top. While the paint is still wet, use a pencil to draw designs or patterns. The paint will resist the pencil marks, creating interesting effects.
- Explore shading techniques: Practice shading with pencils by creating a still life drawing of objects from your surroundings. Experiment with different pressures and blending techniques to achieve different shades and textures.
- Create a self-portrait: Use a mirror or a photograph as a reference and draw a self-portrait using pencils and colored pencils. Pay attention to capturing facial features and expressions.
