Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and use correct English grammar in sentences while exploring language arts concepts through your favorite games like Roblox, Minecraft, and VR games.

Materials and Prep

  • No additional materials are required for this lesson.
  • Prior knowledge of basic English grammar concepts such as parts of speech and sentence structure is recommended.

Activities

  1. Create a Grammar Guidebook:

Using your favorite game as inspiration, design a guidebook that explains different grammar rules. Include examples and explanations for concepts like nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and sentence structure. Be creative with the visuals and make it engaging.

  2. Grammar Quest:

Embark on a grammar quest in your virtual game world. Create a list of sentences with grammatical errors and challenge yourself to find and correct them. Make sure to explain why each correction is necessary.

  3. Grammar Building Blocks:

Build structures or landscapes in your game using different grammar components. For example, construct a sentence tower where each floor represents a different part of speech. Explain the role of each component as you build.

Eighth Grade Talking Points

  • "In English grammar, nouns are words that name people, places, things, or ideas. Can you give me an example of a noun you've encountered in your game world?"
  • "Verbs are action words that show what someone or something is doing. How can you identify verbs in the sentences you encounter while playing your favorite games?"
  • "Adjectives are descriptive words that modify nouns. Can you think of an adjective that could be used to describe a character or object in your game?"
  • "Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. How do you think adverbs can enhance the descriptions or actions in your game world?"
  • "Sentence structure is important for conveying clear messages. Can you identify the subject and predicate in a sentence you've come across while playing your game?"
