Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to group similar coins together to find the total of each grouping, and then add the totals of each group of coins to find the total amount of money.

Materials and Prep

Materials needed: Coins (pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters)

Things needed to know: Basic understanding of different coins and their values.

Activities

  • Activity 1: Sort the coins into groups by type (pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters).

  • Activity 2: Count the number of coins in each group and write it down.

  • Activity 3: Assign a value to each coin (penny = 1 cent, nickel = 5 cents, dime = 10 cents, quarter = 25 cents).

  • Activity 4: Add the total value of each group of coins to find the total amount of money you have.

Talking Points

  • When we group coins together, we can see how many of each type we have. Let's start by grouping all the pennies together. How many pennies do we have?

  • Now, let's count the nickels. Remember, each nickel is worth 5 cents. How many nickels do we have? Let's count them together.

  • Next, let's move on to the dimes. Dimes are worth 10 cents each. Can you count how many dimes we have? Let's write it down.

  • Lastly, let's count the quarters. Quarters are worth 25 cents each. Count the quarters and write down how many we have.

  • Now that we have the total number of each type of coin, let's add up the values. Start with the pennies, then add the nickels, dimes, and quarters. What is the total amount of money we have?
