Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will have a better knowledge and understanding of the properties and performance of textiles.
Materials and Prep
- Fabric samples (cotton, silk, wool, polyester, etc.)
- Magnifying glass
- Notebook and pen
- No prior knowledge needed
Activities
- Fabric Investigation: Examine different fabric samples using the magnifying glass. Describe the texture, weave, and any patterns present.
- Stretch Test: Explore the elasticity of fabrics by stretching them gently. Note how each fabric reacts and discuss the importance of elasticity in clothing.
- Water Test: Test the absorbency of various fabrics by placing drops of water on them. Observe how quickly they absorb the water and discuss why this property is essential in certain garments.
- Burn Test: **Safety Note: Adult supervision required** Perform a burn test on fabric scraps to identify the type of fabric based on how it burns and smells. Discuss the significance of this test in the textile industry.
Talking Points
- "Fabrics are made up of fibers that determine their properties such as softness, durability, and breathability."
- "Understanding the weave of a fabric can help us predict its strength and drape."
- "Different fibers have unique characteristics; for example, cotton is breathable, while polyester is wrinkle-resistant."
- "Textiles play a crucial role in our everyday lives, from the clothes we wear to the furniture we use."
