Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will understand the basics of Chemistry and be able to conduct simple chemical experiments at home.
Materials and Prep
Materials needed: water, baking soda, vinegar, food coloring, small containers, safety goggles, measuring spoons, and a notebook to record observations.
Make sure to have a safe working area and adult supervision for some experiments.
Activities
Create a volcano eruption by mixing baking soda, vinegar, and food coloring in a container. Observe the chemical reaction and record what happens.
Make a rainbow in a jar by layering different colored liquids with different densities. Learn about density and how liquids can stack on top of each other.
Grow crystals using a simple solution of water and sugar. Watch how crystals form over a few days and examine them under a magnifying glass.
Talking Points
"Chemistry is like magic, but it's all about mixing different substances to create new things."
"When we mix baking soda and vinegar, they react together to produce bubbles and fizz. This reaction releases a gas called carbon dioxide."
"Density is how tightly packed the molecules in a substance are. That's why some liquids can float on top of others!"
"Crystals are beautiful structures that form when molecules arrange themselves in a specific pattern. They can come in different shapes and colors."
