Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to plant new seeds for the next season and understand the process of seed germination.
Materials and Prep
- Seeds of your choice (e.g., sunflower, bean, tomato)
- Small pots or containers
- Soil
- Watering can or spray bottle
- Access to sunlight
- Scissors (with adult supervision)
No prior knowledge required, just enthusiasm to learn about plants!
Activities
- Seed Selection: Choose the seeds you want to plant and discuss why you chose them. Research the specific requirements of each seed.
- Pot Preparation: Fill the pots with soil, leaving some space at the top. Make a small hole in the soil for planting the seeds.
- Planting Seeds: Place the seeds in the holes and cover them gently with soil. Water the soil lightly.
- Observation Time: Place the pots in a sunny spot and observe the changes in the seeds daily. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.
- Record Keeping: Maintain a plant journal to track the growth of your seeds. Draw pictures or take photos to document the progress.
Talking Points
- Plants grow from seeds. When we plant a seed in soil and give it water and sunlight, it starts to grow.
- "Just like we need food to grow, plants need soil, water, and sunlight to grow big and strong."
- Seeds have everything they need inside them to start growing. It's like a tiny package waiting to open and turn into a plant.
- "Seeds are like little magic beans that have the power to become beautiful flowers or tasty vegetables."
- Plants make their own food using sunlight in a process called photosynthesis. This is why they need sunlight to grow.
- "Plants are like little chefs that cook their own food using sunlight. They are amazing little chefs, aren't they?"
