Objective

By the end of this lesson, the Eighth grade-level homeschool student will be able to understand and apply healthy and earth-friendly eating and living practices.

Materials and Prep

  • Pen and paper
  • Access to the internet
  • Optional: Cookbook with healthy recipes

Before starting the lesson, it would be helpful for the student to have some basic knowledge of nutrition and the environment.

Activities

  1. Research and Create a Healthy Meal Plan
  2. Ask the student to research and create a healthy meal plan for a day. They should include breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. Encourage them to focus on incorporating whole foods, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. They can write down the meal plan and explain why each meal is considered healthy.

  3. Explore Earth-Friendly Eating Practices
  4. Guide the student to research and explore earth-friendly eating practices, such as reducing food waste, buying locally sourced food, and choosing sustainable packaging. Ask them to write a short paragraph explaining each practice and how it contributes to a healthier planet.

  5. Design an Eco-Friendly Meal
  6. Challenge the student to design a meal that is both healthy and eco-friendly. They should consider the ingredients, packaging, and cooking methods. Encourage them to think creatively and come up with innovative ideas. They can draw or write a description of their meal and explain why it is both healthy and earth-friendly.
