Materials and Prep
- Large piece of paper or poster board
- Markers or crayons
- Scissors
- Glue stick
- Magazines or newspapers
Before starting the lesson, make sure to familiarize yourself with different places within a community, such as schools, parks, hospitals, and stores.
Activities
- Create a Community Collage: Ask the student to cut out pictures of different places within a community from magazines or newspapers. Help them glue these pictures onto the large piece of paper or poster board to create a collage.
- Identify and Discuss: Go through the collage together and ask the student to identify each place. Discuss the purpose of each place and why they are important in a community.
- Draw Your Community: Provide the student with markers or crayons and ask them to draw their own community on a separate piece of paper. Encourage them to include different places they have learned about in their drawing.
