Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply arithmetic concepts to conduct simple experiments.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and pencil
- Various objects for experimentation (e.g., marbles, coins, toy cars)
- Ruler or measuring tape
Before starting the lesson, make sure you have a basic understanding of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Activities
-
Experiment with Addition and Subtraction:
- Choose two objects and count their total number. Write down the number as the sum.
- Remove one of the objects and count how many are left. Write down the number as the difference.
- Repeat the process with different objects and numbers.
-
Experiment with Multiplication:
- Take a group of objects, such as marbles, and count how many are in the group. Write down the number as the total.
- Divide the group into equal smaller groups and count how many objects are in each smaller group. Write down the number as the quotient.
- Repeat the process with different numbers of objects and groups.
-
Experiment with Division:
- Choose a total number of objects and divide them into equal smaller groups. Write down the number of objects in each smaller group as the quotient.
- Count how many smaller groups you have created. Write down the number as the divisor.
- Repeat the process with different total numbers and divisor values.
Third Grade Talking Points
- "Today, we are going to combine math and experiments to learn about arithmetic."
- "Arithmetic is all about working with numbers and performing operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division."
- "In our first activity, we will use addition and subtraction to count objects and find the sum and difference."
- "Next, we will explore multiplication by grouping objects and finding the total number of objects in each group."
- "Finally, we will dive into division by dividing a given number of objects into equal smaller groups."
- "Remember to write down your findings and observations as we go through the experiments."
