Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the different phases of matter - solid, liquid, and gas.
Materials and Prep
- Water
- Ice cubes
- A pot
- A stove (to be used by an adult)
- A glass
No prior knowledge required, just bring your curiosity and enthusiasm!
Activities
- Ice Cube Melting: Take an ice cube and observe how it changes from a solid to a liquid as it melts.
- Boiling Water: Watch as water boils in a pot on the stove (to be done with adult supervision) and see how it changes from a liquid to a gas.
- Condensation: Pour hot water into a glass and observe how water droplets form on the outside of the glass as it cools down.
Talking Points
- "Matter is all around us, and it can exist in different forms called phases. The three main phases of matter are solid, liquid, and gas."
- "Solids have a fixed shape and volume, like ice cubes. Liquids can change shape but have a fixed volume, like water. Gases can change both their shape and volume, like steam."
- "When a solid turns into a liquid, we say it is melting. When a liquid turns into a gas, we say it is evaporating. When a gas turns back into a liquid, we say it is condensing."
- "Remember, matter can change from one phase to another by heating or cooling. Isn't it fascinating how matter behaves differently in each phase?"
