Objective
By the end of this lesson, Mason will be able to practice addition and subtraction skills through a fun board game activity.
Materials and Prep
- Board game with dice and playing pieces
- Pen and paper for scorekeeping
- Basic understanding of addition and subtraction
Activities
- Roll and Move: Roll the dice and move your playing piece that number of spaces. Practice adding or subtracting the numbers on the dice with your current space.
- Math Challenges: Create math challenges for each other to solve before taking a turn. For example, "What is 5 + 3?"
- Scorekeeping: Keep track of your scores by adding and subtracting points earned during the game.
Talking Points
- Understanding Addition: "Addition is putting things together. When we add, we find the total of two or more numbers."
- Understanding Subtraction: "Subtraction is taking things away. When we subtract, we find out how much is left after taking away a number."
- Using Dice: "Roll the dice and count the dots to know how many spaces to move."
- Practicing Math: "Practice addition and subtraction by solving math challenges and keeping score during the game."
