Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will understand the basic concepts of government and citizenship through the exploration of a sims computer game.

Materials and Prep

  • A sims computer game
  • A computer or gaming device

Activities

  1. Start by playing the sims computer game together. Take turns controlling the characters and making decisions for them.
  2. While playing, discuss the concept of government and how it relates to the game. Talk about who makes the rules and how they are enforced.
  3. Encourage your student to think about the responsibilities of the sims characters as citizens in the virtual world. Discuss how their actions can impact the community and the consequences of their choices.
  4. After playing for a while, have a reflection session where you and your student discuss the similarities and differences between the sims world and the real world. Talk about the importance of citizenship and being an active member of a community.
