Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Pencil

No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Brainstorm Superhero Ideas: Start by brainstorming ideas for your own superhero. Think about their name, appearance, powers, and personality traits. Write down your ideas on a piece of paper.

  2. Create a Story Outline: Use your superhero ideas to create an outline for your story. Include an introduction, problem, solution, and conclusion. Write down your outline on a separate piece of paper.

  3. Write Your Story: Using your outline, start writing your superhero story. Begin with an exciting introduction to grab the reader's attention. Use descriptive language to bring your superhero and their adventures to life. Make sure to include proper sentence structure and punctuation.

  4. Revise and Edit: Once you have finished writing your story, read through it carefully. Check for any spelling or grammar mistakes and make revisions where necessary. You can also ask a parent or guardian to proofread your story for you.

  5. Illustrate Your Story: After revising and editing, add illustrations to your story. Draw pictures of your superhero and the key moments in your story. Use colors and details to make your illustrations visually appealing.

Third Grade Talking Points

  • "A superhero is a character with special powers who uses them to help others and fight against villains."

  • "When writing a story, it's important to have a clear beginning, middle, and end. The beginning introduces the characters and setting, the middle presents a problem or challenge, and the end resolves the problem and wraps up the story."

  • "Descriptive language helps the reader imagine what is happening in the story. Use words that describe how things look, sound, feel, taste, or smell."

  • "Proper sentence structure means using capital letters at the beginning of sentences and ending them with punctuation like periods, question marks, or exclamation marks."

  • "Revising and editing your writing means reading it carefully to make improvements. Look for spelling mistakes, grammar errors, and ways to make your story more interesting."

  • "Illustrations are pictures that help tell a story. They can show what the characters and settings look like, as well as important moments in the story."
