Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will learn about the different parts of a plant and how they grow. You will also understand the importance of sunlight and water for plants to thrive.

Materials and Prep

Materials needed:

  • Empty egg carton or small pots
  • Soil
  • Seeds (e.g., sunflower, bean, or tomato)
  • Watering can or spray bottle
  • Coloring pencils or markers

Before the lesson, make sure to have a sunny spot ready for planting and have the materials organized.

Activities

  • Planting Seeds: Fill the egg carton compartments or pots with soil and plant the seeds. Water them gently.
  • Labeling: Use the coloring pencils or markers to label each seedling with its name.
  • Observation Time: Place the planted seeds in a sunny spot and observe them daily. Record any changes you notice.
  • Watering Routine: Learn how much water your plants need and create a watering routine.

Talking Points

  • Plants Need Sunlight: "Plants need sunlight to make food. Just like we feel happy in the sun, plants need sunlight to grow big and strong."
  • Roots Drink Water: "Plants have roots that drink water from the soil. It's like how we drink water to stay healthy."
  • Leaves Make Food: "Plants have leaves that make food using sunlight. It's like how we eat to have energy."
  • Seeds Grow into Plants: "Seeds are like tiny babies for plants. When we plant them and take care of them, they grow into big plants."
  • Watering Helps Plants: "Plants need water to drink, just like we need water to drink. Let's not give them too much water, just enough to stay healthy."
