Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the basic concepts of creating a garden and identify the key components required for successful plant growth.

Materials and Prep

  • Seeds or seedlings
  • Pots or containers
  • Soil
  • Watering can or spray bottle
  • Gardening gloves (optional)
  • Small gardening tools (optional)
  • Chart paper and markers
  • Access to outdoor space or a sunny windowsill

Prior to the lesson, make sure you have gathered all the materials and set up a designated area for the garden.

Activities

  1. Discuss the importance of plants and gardens. Talk about how plants provide us with food, oxygen, and beauty.
  2. Explain the basic needs of plants: sunlight, water, soil, and air.
  3. Show the student how to prepare the soil by loosening it with hands or small tools, and then filling the pots or containers with soil.
  4. Plant the seeds or seedlings in the soil, ensuring they are at the appropriate depth and spacing.
  5. Water the plants gently using a watering can or spray bottle, making sure not to overwater them.
  6. Discuss the importance of regularly watering the plants and how it helps them grow.
  7. Place the pots or containers in a sunny spot outdoors or near a sunny windowsill.
  8. Create a chart together to track the growth of the plants. Include columns for date, plant height, and any observations.
  9. Encourage the student to regularly observe and record the changes in the plants' growth on the chart.
  10. Discuss any observations made and answer any questions the student may have.
